Why the Dolphin? (cont)

Of all the animals in the world, dolphins seem most wholeheartedly to enjoy life-to play just for the fun of it! Our customers and we are in a stressful business, and we need our sense of humor to stay healthy. Our challenge is to have fun at work.

There are more than 40 species of dolphins and porpoises throughout the world. They are mammals and they range in size from the lordly killer whale (technically a dolphin) to five foot botos in the Amazon river. The dolphin is surely an example of evolutionary perfection-it has adapted beautifully to live in harmony with its natural environments.

For various reasons we don't understand, the dolphin has been important in legendary, religious, and artistic cultures. For example, nestling in the northern hemisphere is the constellation of the dolphin-Delphinus. The ancient Greeks believed this constellation shone down on the centre of the world, Delphi. The root of the word dolphin is 'delphys', which means 'womb', so the centre of the world was also the womb of the world. The dolphin has been an intrinsic symbol of our cultures and uniquely unites many people and cultures. For more information, please visit the World Wildlife Fund.
